I am an artist living and working in New York City with an extensive background in theatrical design. I have over 30 years of experience in design, rendering, drafting and illustration for countless International Theatre, Broadway, Off-Broadway, Radio City Music Hall, National Tours, Network Television, Special Theatrical Events, Theme Parks and Industrial Shows. Skilled Hand-Artist (Graphite, Watercolor, Marker, Air Brush, Gouache)
My family were farmers in the Midwest, and I was raised in the Mennonite church. I graduated from Illinois State University in 1973 with a comprehensive major in Painting. I moved to New York City upon graduation and spent my first 13 years working as a professional actor doing primarily musical theatre. I joined Actors Equity and spent those years on stage in regional theatres, Off- Broadway, summer stock, dinner theatres, star packages, and a year on a National Tour of GREASE (at that time the longest running Broadway musical.) During those years, I continued painting and designing in my free time.
My priorities changed in the 1980s with the passing of many of my friends and colleagues to the AIDS crisis. I lost my performing ambitions and returned to my love of painting and design. Using my theatrical contacts, I spent two years in the Design Department at CBS working on soap operas and doing set decoration for a variety of CBS Network shows (AS THE WORLD TURNS, THE GUIDING LIGHT, 60 MINUTES, CBS SUNDAY MORNING, NFL TODAY) in the West 57th Street Studios. I designed many regional theatre productions for old theatre pals Susan Stroman (5-time Tony Award-winning Director/Choreographer) and Scott Ellis (Award-winning Broadway & Television Director). I was offered a staff position with HOTOPP ASSOCIATES (a scenic design firm in NYC owned and helmed by the gifted and prolific theatrical designer Michael Hotopp).
I remained at HOTOPP for 30 years as a Senior Designer and Concept Artist. I worked on hundreds of diverse projects there over the years including THE BASEBALL HALL OF FAME, CBS Coverage of THE WINTER OLYMPICS in Lillehammer & Nagano, OPRAH WINFREY SHOW, LIZA MINELLI at Radio City Music Hall, Disney’s ANIMAL KINGDOM, SEAWORLD, and many more. For the last 20 years, I designed “ICE!” shows for Gaylord Entertainment (Holiday ICE! shows carved from 2 million pounds of ice by artisans from Harbin, China).
I am currently doing contract and commissioned work out of my East Harlem studio. I have been enjoying a return to paint and graphite…portraiture and figurative work. I recently exhibited and sold work in the Harlem Art Walk exhibit “SPARK” at EL Barrio’s Artspace PS109 as well as "ART ON THE CORNER" (5th & 8th Shows) 2780 Broadway. I have original work available for sale as well as archival pigment prints on watercolor Hahnemuhle William Turner fine art paper. (See Shop)
I live on the Upper West Side of Manhattan with my partner of over 20 years, Andric Collins Bowen.
